Creative Process
My collection is like an imaginary garden or coral reef that keeps on growing.
Every part can be mixed and matched with the rest.
Lost Wax
When I’m creating new pieces, I usually start in a special kind of wax.
Wax comes in various forms, you can start from flexible sheets and wires, you can carve from solid blocks, and then there is clay-like wax. I use it all.
I carve, mold, melt, drip, cut and fold until I find a shape that looks like it hasn’t been made by a human.
I like shapes that look like they have grown in the wild.
(Although I do love a good roman signet ring.)
Casting
When I’m done creating prototypes in wax, I can make a sand cast of the most simple shapes, but more often I bring it to a foundry.
The foundry casts a rough version in silver or gold, and then I finish the pieces.
At the goldsmith's bench
I love to work with fire and metal, sawing, soldering, filing and polishing to create the final finished piece of jewelry.
